Learning outcomes

  1. Assemble promotion evidence for Staff: scope, impact, and influence, with artifacts.
  2. Map their influence network and close gaps.
  3. Choose between Staff, Principal, management, and architect paths deliberately.
  4. Sustain the role: protect focus time, avoid burnout, and keep technical depth.

Lab and exercises

Lab

STF-020-LAB1 · Promotion packet

Outcomes: 1–4 · Time: ~3 h

  1. Choose three to five outcomes from the capstone and your real work.
  2. Write the packet: scope summary, outcomes, evidence (documents, metrics, adoption data), peer voices.
  3. Add your influence map, gap actions, and a short note on your path choice.
  4. Add a sustainability plan: focus time and technical depth.
  5. Present to a role-played calibration panel and answer challenges.

Acceptance: every claim backed by an artifact or metric.

Exercises (case-based; six exercises)

IDOutcomeTask
STF-020-EX011Rewrite five activity statements as outcome statements with evidence.
STF-020-EX021Review a sample packet and mark each claim evidenced, weak, or unsupported.
STF-020-EX032Draw your influence map and write three actions to close gaps.
STF-020-EX043Compare Staff, Principal, manager, and architect paths for your preferences; decide and list one experiment to test it.
STF-020-EX054Plan a quarter with protected deep-work blocks and three things you will decline.
STF-020-EX064Write a quarterly plan to stay technical: one prototype, two reviews, one new topic.
Show solutions
  • EX01 "Ran the architecture forum" becomes "Forum decisions cut review time from 3 weeks to 1 and removed duplicate tools in 6 teams" with a link to the decision records.
  • EX02 Evidenced: linked RFC and metric. Weak: "teams liked it" without survey. Unsupported: claims with no artifact; ask for evidence or remove.
  • EX03 Gaps may include security, finance, or a region; actions: a joint review, a talk, a shared working group.
  • EX04 Answer by daily work: for example Staff if you enjoy cross-team design; manager if you enjoy growing people; test by leading a team for a quarter or doing architecture reviews.
  • EX05 Two blocks of four hours for deep work, meeting limit, decline three requests with reasons and alternatives, schedule recovery.
  • EX06 Prototype of golden-path feature, two incident or design reviews done in depth, one learning topic with a short write-up.

Outcome 2 is also covered by the lab influence map.

Workplace evidence: a promotion packet or performance review at Staff scope.

Quiz

Outcomes: O1 promotion evidence · O2 influence network · O3 choosing a path · O4 sustaining the role.

A self-check for you: nothing is graded, saved or sent anywhere. Choose an answer, then check it. You can try again as often as you like.

  1. 1Promotion committees mainly look for:O1

  4. 4An influence map helps you:O2
  5. 5A gap in your influence network is best closed by:O2

Practical part

Six case exercises STF-020-EX01 to EX06 plus the lab, assessed by a calibration panel. Pass: at least five of six exercises correct, quiz at least 8/10, and a packet in which every claim is backed by an artifact or metric.

Common mistakes

Packets that list activities instead of outcomes; choosing a path by title rather than by the work.

Assessment

Calibration panel.

Workplace evidence

A promotion packet or performance review at Staff scope.
