3 h of practice (estimate)
Learning outcomes
- Assess capability gaps across teams (skills, practices, tooling).
- Design mentorship systems and learning paths beyond one-to-one mentoring.
- Start and sustain communities of practice.
- Measure whether capability development is working.

Lab
SRA-016-LAB1 · Capability plan
Outcomes: 1–4 · Time: ~2 h
- List the capabilities Commerce 2030's strategy requires at 12 and 36 months (for example event-driven design, SRE practices).
- Assess provided data for eight teams and build a gap heat map with evidence.
- Design a one-year development plan using more than one lever (mentorship system, learning path, a community of practice, tooling, hiring).
- Define measures, baselines, and review dates.
- Map each gap to a strategy action.
Acceptance: plan ties gaps to strategy actions.
Exercises (case-based; six exercises)
| ID | Outcome | Task |
|---|---|---|
| SRA-016-EX01 | 1 | From the strategy, list five capabilities needed in 12 months and state the evidence you would collect for each. |
| SRA-016-EX02 | 1 | Given incident data for four teams, rate their SRE practice and justify each rating. |
| SRA-016-EX03 | 2 | Design a learning path and mentor system for event-driven design across 25 teams. |
| SRA-016-EX04 | 3 | Write a charter for a reliability guild with leadership rotation and monthly outputs. |
| SRA-016-EX05 | 3 | A community launched six months ago has faded. Diagnose and propose a recovery. |
| SRA-016-EX06 | 4 | Define a scorecard that tells whether capability development is working, with baseline and target. |
Show solutions
- EX01 Event design (design review outcomes), SRE practice (incident reviews, on-call data), data contracts (consumer breakage count), observability (trace coverage), security practice (findings trend).
- EX02 Ratings follow evidence: repeated timeouts missing means "learning"; tested runbooks and alert quality mean "practicing"; avoid ranking individuals.
- EX03 Reading, shadowing a design review, pairing on a real flow, then leading a small design; mentors trained and matched to gaps; office hours; track who is reached.
- EX04 Purpose, three leaders, monthly cadence with an output (checklist, postmortem digest), sponsor, rotation every six months, measure adoption and incident rate.
- EX05 Likely causes: no output, no sponsor, a single leader who left; restart with a real incident, new co-leaders, and a visible deliverable.
- EX06 Outcomes: mean time to recover, repeat incident rate, share of teams with tested runbooks; leading: engineers able to lead a design; baseline from the first assessment, reviewed quarterly.
Outcome 2 is also covered by the lab plan; outcome 4 by the lab measures.
Workplace evidence: a community of practice or learning program you started that outlived your direct involvement.
Quiz
Outcomes: O1 assessing capability gaps · O2 mentorship systems and learning paths · O3 communities of practice · O4 measuring growth.
A self-check for you: nothing is graded, saved or sent anywhere. Choose an answer, then check it. You can try again as often as you like.
Practical part
Six case exercises SRA-016-EX01 to EX06 plus the lab (plan review). Pass: quiz at least 8/10, and a plan review showing gaps backed by evidence, more than one lever, measures with baselines, and each gap tied to a strategy action.
Common mistakes
Training as the only lever; communities that fade after the launch event.
Assessment
Plan review.
Workplace evidence
