Learning outcomes

  1. Understand the goals and constraints of product, security, finance, legal, and infrastructure partners.
  2. Build joint plans where engineering trade-offs are visible to partners.
  3. Negotiate scope, timelines, and risk with partners as peers.
  4. Build durable working relationships across functions.

Lessons

  1. 01Engineering is one function among several
  2. 02What product, finance, and security need from you
  3. 03Joint planning
  4. 04Negotiating as peers
  5. 05Building relationships across functions
  6. 06Demo: a joint planning session with product and finance
  7. 07Demo: negotiating a security requirement that threatens a launch date

Lab and exercises

Lab

SRA-015-LAB1 · Marketplace launch plan

Outcomes: 1–4 · Time: ~2 h

  1. Write a goals, constraints, and measures profile for product, finance, security, and legal partners.
  2. Build a joint launch plan with scope tiers, dates, costs, and risks, with trade-offs visible.
  3. Run a planning session with role-played partners and negotiate scope, date, and risk, including one late requirement.
  4. Record decisions and owners, and write a relationship plan for each partner.

Acceptance: each partner signs off on the trade-offs that affect them.

Exercises (case-based; six exercises)

IDOutcomeTask
SRA-015-EX011Write what finance, security, and legal each need from engineering for the marketplace launch, and in what form.
SRA-015-EX022Convert an engineering plan into a joint plan with scope tiers and visible trade-offs.
SRA-015-EX033Product demands "launch 1 March, full scope". List interests behind it and three options.
SRA-015-EX043Prepare a negotiation with security about a late identity-verification requirement.
SRA-015-EX054Write a relationship plan for one partner with cadence, what you give, and what you learn.
SRA-015-EX062Review an engineering status that hides a risk from product and rewrite it to share the risk and ask for a decision.
Show solutions
  • EX01 Finance: cost drivers and forecast ranges; security: data flows, threat model, evidence of controls; legal: regulatory scope per country and contract terms; deliver in a quarterly one-pager and ad hoc for changes.
  • EX02 Tiers: must (seller onboarding, payouts), should (reporting), could (promotions); each tier has date, cost, and owner; the choices are product's and finance's with you.
  • EX03 Interests: seller commitment, competitor timing, revenue plan. Options: reduced scope on 1 March, full scope on a later date, full scope with added people (cost and ramp-up risk).
  • EX04 Understand the minimum control; offer phased control (limits on new-seller payouts, manual review), date for the full control, risk owner; avoid escalating over security.
  • EX05 Example: monthly 30-minute check with finance, shared forecast, early notice of cost changes; learn their planning calendar and constraints.
  • EX06 State the risk, its likelihood and impact, options (scope cut, date move, mitigation), and the decision needed with a date.

Outcomes 1 and 4 are also covered by the lab profiles and relationship plans.

Quiz

Outcomes: O1 partner goals and constraints · O2 joint plans · O3 negotiating as peers · O4 durable relationships.

A self-check for you: nothing is graded, saved or sent anywhere. Choose an answer, then check it. You can try again as often as you like.

  1. 1Why is treating security as a blocker counterproductive?O1
  2. 2What does finance most need from engineering?O1
  3. 3All partners most want from engineering:O1
  4. 4Joint planning differs from handing over a plan because:O2
  5. 5Which makes a trade-off visible?O2
  6. 6Product's status shows "green" while you know of a serious risk. You should:O2
  7. 7Product demands "1 March, full scope". First move:O3
  8. 8Security adds a late requirement. Best approach:O3
  9. 9Trust across functions is built mainly by:O4
  10. 10A joint success should be:O4

Practical part

Six case exercises SRA-015-EX01 to EX06 plus the lab (negotiation simulation with role-played partners). Pass: quiz at least 8/10, and a simulation in which risk is stated honestly, options are offered, and each partner signs off on the trade-offs affecting them.

Common mistakes

Treating partners as blockers; hiding engineering risk from product.

Assessment
