Learning outcomes

  1. Describe what owning a service means: on-call, SLOs, dependencies, cost, and roadmap.
  2. Prioritize between features, reliability work, and technical debt using evidence.
  3. Run a production readiness checklist before launch.
  4. Communicate service health and trade-offs to product and other teams.

Lessons

  1. 01You build it, you run it
  2. 02On-call well

Lab and exercises

Lab

MID-065-LAB1 · Owner's pack

Outcomes: 1–4 · Time: ~2 h

  1. Choose one Shop service and create its ownership page: purpose, owners, SLOs, dashboards, runbooks, dependencies, known risks.
  2. List the top three technical debts with evidence, cost, effort, and a decision.
  3. Run the production readiness checklist and record evidence.
  4. Write a short health and trade-off note for product.

Acceptance: passes the readiness checklist.

Exercises (assessment: readiness review; five exercises)

IDOutcomeTask
MID-065-EX011List ten items an ownership page for inventory must contain and say why each matters.
MID-065-EX022Given a spent error budget, a feature request, and three debt items, make a prioritization with evidence.
MID-065-EX031Review a noisy alert list (twelve alerts) and decide which should page, which should ticket, and which should be deleted.
MID-065-EX043Run the readiness checklist for one service and list failed items with risk.
MID-065-EX054Write a one-paragraph note to product explaining a reliability-first quarter and its trade-offs.
Show solutions
  • EX01 Purpose, owners and contacts, SLOs, dashboards, alerts, runbooks, dependencies, data stores, cost, known risks and debt: each lets another person operate or change the service.
  • EX02 Reliability first while the budget is spent; show evidence (incidents, lost hours); schedule the debt item with the highest cost per effort; give product a date for resuming features.
  • EX03 Page only on user-visible symptoms or SLO burn with a runbook; ticket for slow-burn issues; delete alerts nobody acts on.
  • EX04 Evidence per item (link or test result); failed items ranked by impact and likelihood, with owners and dates.
  • EX05 Start with the decision; state SLO performance, the cost of staying the course, what is delayed, and the date to review.

Quiz

Outcomes: O1 what ownership means · O2 prioritization with evidence · O3 readiness checklist · O4 communicating as an owner.

A self-check for you: nothing is graded, saved or sent anywhere. Choose an answer, then check it. You can try again as often as you like.

  1. 1Owning a service means:O1
  2. 2An alert that pages a human should:O1
  3. 3In an incident, first:O1
  4. 4A spent error budget suggests:O2
  5. 5Best way to argue for paying down debt:O2
  6. 6A debt list that is never prioritized is:O2
  7. 7A backup is proven ready by:O3
  8. 8A readiness gap you decide to accept should be:O3
  9. 9A message to product should start with:O4
  10. 10Reporting health in SLO terms means:O4

Practical part

Five exercises MID-065-EX01 to EX05 plus the lab. Pass: at least four exercises correct and an owner's pack that passes the readiness checklist.

Common mistakes

Ownership as "I wrote it"; debt listed but never prioritized.

Assessment

Readiness review.
