Learning outcomes

  1. Assess the organization's threat landscape and map it to architectural controls.
  2. Define organization-wide trust boundaries and identity strategy for people, services, and partners.
  3. Build secure defaults into the platform so teams are secure without extra effort.
  4. Partner with the security team on a multi-year roadmap.

Lessons

  1. 01Security strategy vs security reviews
  2. 02Threat landscape for a commerce organization
  3. 03Organization-wide trust boundaries
  4. 04Secure defaults in the platform
  5. 05Supply-chain security at scale
  6. 06A joint roadmap with security
  7. 07Demo: turning five recurring audit findings into platform defaults
  8. 08Demo: a trust-boundary map for the whole organization

Lab and exercises

Lab

STF-008-LAB1 · Secure by default

Outcomes: 1–4 · Time: ~2.5 h

  1. Assess the threat landscape for Platform 2.0 and rank the top threats.
  2. Draw organization-wide trust boundaries and an identity strategy for people, services, and partners.
  3. Define five secure defaults built into the golden path, each tied to a class of audit findings.
  4. Draft a multi-year joint roadmap with a role-played CISO.
  5. Defend the strategy in review.

Acceptance: each default removes a class of findings rather than one finding.

Exercises (case-based; six exercises)

IDOutcomeTask
STF-008-EX011List the top five threats for a marketplace-enabled commerce group and map each to an architectural control.
STF-008-EX022Draw a trust-boundary sketch for public edge, services, payments, data, and a partner API; mark controls at each crossing.
STF-008-EX032Propose one identity approach for employees, services, and partners, with least-privilege rules.
STF-008-EX043Turn "teams commit secrets to repositories" into a platform default; describe enforcement and exception handling.
STF-008-EX053Given 40 findings in six classes, choose the three defaults with the biggest reduction and state the expected effect.
STF-008-EX064Write a one-page joint roadmap with the security team: roles, year-one goals, measures, and meeting cadence.
Show solutions
  • EX01 Examples: account takeover (rate limits, MFA), payment fraud (isolated payment zone), injection (framework defaults), supply chain (signed artifacts), insider misuse (least privilege and audit).
  • EX02 Controls: edge firewall and authentication, mutual authentication between services, payment zone isolation, encrypted data zone with access logging, partner gateway with keys and limits.
  • EX03 Central identity provider; workload identities for services; scoped partner credentials; short-lived tokens; review access regularly.
  • EX04 Secrets manager in the template, pipeline secret scan that fails the build, logged exceptions with owner and expiry.
  • EX05 Pick by counts per class and ease; state findings removed per quarter as the target.
  • EX06 Security owns policy and monitoring; platform owns defaults; measures are recurring findings and time to patch; monthly meeting.

Outcome coverage: all four outcomes are covered by exercises and lab.

Workplace evidence: a secure default you introduced at organization level and the findings it eliminated.

Quiz

Outcomes: O1 threat landscape and controls · O2 trust boundaries and identity · O3 secure defaults · O4 joint roadmap with security.

A self-check for you: nothing is graded, saved or sent anywhere. Choose an answer, then check it. You can try again as often as you like.

  1. 1Recurring audit findings in most teams call for:O1
  2. 2Ranking threats helps because:O1
  3. 3Between internal services, the better stance is:O2
  4. 4Trust boundaries should be:O2
  5. 5One identity strategy should cover:O2
  6. 6A secure default is best because it:O3
  7. 7The right test for a default is that it removes:O3
  8. 8Where should supply-chain scanning and signing run?O3
  9. 9In a joint roadmap, who owns default enforcement in the platform?O4
  10. 10A joint roadmap fails when it:O4

Practical part

Six case exercises STF-008-EX01 to EX06 plus the lab, reviewed as a strategy with a role-played CISO. Pass: at least five of six exercises correct, quiz at least 8/10, and a strategy in which each default removes a class of findings.

Common mistakes

Strategy as a list of tools; security work pushed onto every team individually.

Assessment

Strategy review with the CISO role-player.

Workplace evidence

A secure default you introduced at organization level and the findings it eliminated.
