Learning outcomes

  1. Plan for regional and provider-level failures and decide what must survive them.
  2. Run a chaos engineering program with hypotheses, blast-radius control, and learning reviews.
  3. Identify systemic risks (shared dependencies, correlated failures, single teams, knowledge silos).
  4. Present a resilience posture to leadership with prioritized investments.

Lessons

  1. 01Resilience at organization scale
  2. 02Regional and provider failure
  3. 03Chaos engineering as a program
  4. 04Systemic and correlated risk
  5. 05Resilience investment cases
  6. 06Demo: a chaos experiment with a hypothesis and abort criteria
  7. 07Demo: finding the shared dependency behind three "unrelated" incidents

Lab and exercises

Lab

SRA-006-LAB1 · Resilience posture

Outcomes: 1–4 · Time: ~2 h

  1. Tier Commerce 2030 capabilities by survival need and agree recovery targets with role-played business owners.
  2. Assess regional and provider failure scenarios and decide what must survive each.
  3. Plan a chaos program: backlog of experiments with hypotheses, blast radius, abort criteria, cadence, and review process.
  4. Map shared dependencies, correlated risks, single teams, and knowledge silos.
  5. Rank investments and quantify the top risk in business impact.

Acceptance: top risk quantified in business impact.

Exercises (case-based; six exercises)

IDOutcomeTask
SRA-006-EX011Tier ten capabilities (must survive, degrade, may stop) and set recovery targets; justify the two hardest placements.
SRA-006-EX021A cloud account lock-out scenario: list what breaks, what must survive, and the cheapest design that meets the target.
SRA-006-EX032Write a chaos experiment for a message broker degradation: hypothesis, steady state, blast radius, abort criteria, follow-up.
SRA-006-EX042Critique a proposed chaos experiment that has no hypothesis and runs in production at full scale; rewrite it.
SRA-006-EX053From four incident summaries, find the common dependency and propose two mitigations with owners.
SRA-006-EX064Write a one-page resilience investment case with three ranked investments and the top risk in business impact.
Show solutions
  • EX01 Checkout, payments, and order capture must survive; search and recommendations degrade; internal reporting may stop. Hard calls are justified by revenue and legal impact.
  • EX02 Breaks: provisioning, deployment, possibly all services in the account. Must survive: checkout and payments. Cheapest: backups and infrastructure code in a second account, tested restore, break-glass access, with a stated recovery time.
  • EX03 Hypothesis: checkout success stays above 99% with broker latency of 2 s because producers time out and retry. Blast radius: one consumer group in staging, then 1%. Abort: success below 98% or a customer-visible error spike. Follow-up: fix missing timeouts.
  • EX04 Missing: hypothesis, steady-state metric, blast radius, abort criteria, watcher, review. Rewrite starting in staging with small cohorts.
  • EX05 Typical common causes: shared certificate expiry, a shared config service, a single on-call engineer. Mitigations: expiry monitoring and automation; redundancy or caching; cross-train owners.
  • EX06 Rank by risk reduced per cost; show cost, residual risk, and the revenue-at-risk calculation with assumptions (for example hourly revenue times expected outage hours).

Outcome 4 is also covered by the lab ranking and the quiz.

Workplace evidence: a resilience program or systemic risk you led action on.

Quiz

Outcomes: O1 regional and provider failure · O2 chaos engineering programs · O3 systemic risk · O4 presenting resilience posture.

A self-check for you: nothing is graded, saved or sent anywhere. Choose an answer, then check it. You can try again as often as you like.

  1. 1In a regional failure plan, which is often forgotten?O1
  2. 2Which statement about failover plans is correct?O1
  3. 3Which should survive a regional failure first?O1
  4. 4A chaos experiment must include:O2
  5. 5The best place to start an experiment:O2
  6. 6After an experiment you should:O2
  7. 7Three unrelated incidents all involve an expiring internal certificate. This is:O3
  8. 8A single engineer everything depends on is:O3
  9. 9Leadership best understands a risk expressed as:O4
  10. 10A resilience investment list should include:O4

Practical part

Six case exercises SRA-006-EX01 to EX06 plus the lab, presented as a resilience posture to role-played leadership. Pass: at least five of six exercises correct, quiz at least 8/10, and a posture whose top risk is quantified in business impact.

Common mistakes

Chaos without hypotheses; resilience plans for services but not for people and tools.

Assessment

Posture presentation.

Workplace evidence
