OpenTelemetry concepts
On This Lesson 4 topics
This lesson is planned. The outline below lists the topics it will cover. The full lesson has not been published yet.
In this lesson
understand the OpenTelemetry (OTel) model.
Planned topics
- OTel is a vendor-neutral standard and set of libraries for traces, metrics, and logs.
- A trace is a tree of spans; each span has a name, start, duration, attributes, and a parent.
- Context (trace id, span id) is passed between services in headers (W3C
traceparent). - The OpenTelemetry Collector receives, processes, and exports telemetry to backends (Jaeger or Tempo for traces).
- Sampling decides which traces are kept; verify defaults and versions before recording.
