Learn first

3 h of practice (estimate)

Learning outcomes

  1. Explain regions, availability zones, and the shared-responsibility model.
  2. Design a basic VPC/VNet with public and private subnets.
  3. Configure IAM with least privilege for a service.
  4. Use a managed database, load balancer, and object storage, and estimate their cost.

Lessons

  1. 01Cloud building blocks
  2. 02Regions and availability zones
  3. 03Identity and access management
  4. 04Networking: VPCs and subnets
  5. 05Managed databases, load balancers, object storage
  6. 06Reading a cloud bill
  7. 07Demo: a private database reachable only from the app

Lab and exercises

Lab

MID-056-LAB1 · Shop in the cloud

Outcomes: 1–4 · Time: ~3 h In the console, create a VPC with public and private subnets across two AZs, a managed PostgreSQL in the private tier, an object storage bucket for product images, a load balancer, and a least-privilege role for orders. Write a monthly cost estimate. Tear the environment down afterwards; it is rebuilt with Terraform in MID-058. Acceptance: database has no public endpoint; monthly cost estimate written.

Exercises (assessment: architecture diagram review)

IDOutcomeTask
MID-056-EX011Divide responsibilities between provider and you for a managed database and for a VM.
MID-056-EX021Choose a region and AZ layout for Shop with 99.9% availability; justify.
MID-056-EX032Draw the VPC with subnets, route tables, and security-group rules for Shop.
MID-056-EX043Write a least-privilege policy for orders to read and write one bucket prefix.
MID-056-EX054Estimate monthly cost for the lab environment and name the three largest items.
MID-056-EX064Review a diagram with a public database and an admin key in the app; list fixes.
Show solutions
  • EX01 Managed database: the provider handles the hardware, OS, patching, and failover; you handle access rules, data, queries, and backups policy. VM: you also handle the OS and patches.
  • EX02 One region near users and allowed by data law, services spread across at least two AZs, database with a standby in another AZ.
  • EX03 Public subnets: load balancer, NAT. Private: apps and database. Database rule: allow 5432 from the app group only.
  • EX04 Allow s3:GetObject/PutObject (or the provider equivalent) on arn:...:shop-images/orders/* only; no wildcards.
  • EX05 Typically the database, compute, and NAT or load balancer dominate; verify against the provider's calculator.
  • EX06 Move the database to a private subnet, restrict security groups, replace the key with a workload role, and add audit logging.

Outcome 1 is also covered by quiz Q01–Q03; outcome 3 by the lab (least-privilege role).

Quiz

Outcomes: O1 regions and shared responsibility · O2 VPC design · O3 IAM least privilege · O4 managed services and cost.

A self-check for you: nothing is graded, saved or sent anywhere. Choose an answer, then check it. You can try again as often as you like.

  1. 1In the shared-responsibility model, you are responsible for:O1
  2. 2An availability zone is:O1
  3. 3To survive the loss of one data center, run in:O1
  4. 4Which belongs in a public subnet?O2
  5. 5A database security group should allow:O2
  6. 6A NAT gateway lets private subnets:O2
  7. 7Least privilege means:O3
  8. 8Workloads should authenticate with:O3
  9. 9Sharing a private object temporarily is best done with:O4
  10. 10Which is a typical cost surprise?O4

Practical part

Architecture diagram review (MID-056-EX06) plus lab MID-056-LAB1. Pass: quiz at least 8/10, a private database with no public endpoint, a least-privilege role, and a written cost estimate.

Common mistakes

Admin credentials for applications; public databases; forgetting to tear down.

Assessment

Architecture diagram review.
