Draft outline details

Step by step

  1. Start a kind or k3d cluster (or use the managed one); create the shop namespace.
  2. Apply ConfigMaps, Secrets, and Deployments for catalog, inventory, orders, and the gateway; install Kafka by operator or point to a managed one.
  3. Planned mistake: deploy orders before PostgreSQL is ready and without a startup probe; pods restart repeatedly. Fix: add a startup probe and readiness checks, and let the app retry the connection.
  4. Add Services and an Ingress; call the API through the gateway.
  5. Add resource requests and limits and an HPA on orders; run a rolling update while a load script runs and confirm no failed requests.

Check your understanding

What makes a rolling update lose no requests?

Show answer

Correct readiness probes, graceful shutdown, and surge capacity.
