Cryptography for engineers
On This Lesson 4 topics
This lesson is planned. The outline below lists the topics it will cover. The full lesson has not been published yet.
In this lesson
pick the right primitive for each job and never invent your own.
Planned topics
- Hashing: one-way fingerprint; passwords use a slow salted hash (Argon2, bcrypt, scrypt), not plain SHA.
- Symmetric encryption: one shared key, fast (AES-GCM); gives confidentiality and integrity.
- Asymmetric: key pair; used for key exchange and signatures (RSA, ECDSA, Ed25519).
- Signatures prove who produced data and that it was not changed (for example JWTs).
- Use vetted libraries and modes; never write your own algorithm; never reuse a nonce or IV.

Demonstration
table: job → primitive (store password, encrypt a column, sign a token, verify a download).
