Connection exhaustion

  • Lesson 3 of 8
  • Senior C
On This Lesson 4 topics

This lesson is planned. The outline below lists the topics it will cover. The full lesson has not been published yet.

In this lesson

diagnose exhausted connection pools and database connection limits.

Planned topics

  • Symptom: threads waiting for a connection; timeouts "unable to acquire connection".
  • Causes: slow queries holding connections, leaked connections, transactions open across remote calls, a pool larger than the database can serve across all instances.
  • Evidence: pool metrics (active, idle, pending), database session list showing idle-in-transaction, long-running queries.
  • Fixes: shorter transactions, no remote calls inside transactions, correct pool sizing per instance times replicas, timeouts, leak detection.
Draft outline details

Demonstration

Arithmetic: 40 pods times a pool of 20 equals 800 connections against a database limit of 500. At 10× scale this becomes a failure.

Check your understanding

Why avoid remote calls inside a transaction?

Show answer

They hold a connection while waiting on something slow.
