Learn first

3.5 h of practice (estimate)

Learning outcomes

  1. Produce an architecture description tailored to its audiences (engineers, operators, leadership).
  2. Keep docs close to the code and current (docs-as-code, review on change).
  3. Write operational runbooks that a tired on-call engineer can follow.
  4. Write a design document that gets a decision in one review.

Lessons

  1. 01Documentation for different readers
  2. 02C4 at subsystem scale
  3. 03Docs as code
  4. 04Runbooks under pressure
  5. 05Design docs that get decisions
  6. 06Demo: reviewing and rewriting a confusing runbook

Lab and exercises

Lab

SRC-010-LAB1 · Subsystem architecture pack

Outcomes: 1–4 · Time: ~2.5 h

  1. Write the architecture description (context, containers, key components, quality attributes, constraints) for the order subsystem as docs-as-code.
  2. Write the design doc for the 10× redesign (decision needed, options, recommendation, risks, rollout).
  3. Write runbooks for the top five failure modes from SRC-009.
  4. Have a peer execute one runbook without help; revise from their feedback.

Acceptance: a peer executes a runbook successfully without help.

Exercises (documentation review; six exercises)

IDOutcomeTask
SRC-010-EX011Make an audience matrix (engineers, operators, leadership) for the order subsystem docs with the question each answers.
SRC-010-EX021Sketch the C4 context and container views of the order subsystem in text form.
SRC-010-EX032Propose a repository layout and CI checks that keep docs current.
SRC-010-EX043Rewrite the runbook step "check if the database is OK" into executable steps.
SRC-010-EX054Review a design doc that starts with background and ends without a recommendation; restructure it.
SRC-010-EX063Review a runbook for missing symptom, impact, rollback, and escalation sections and fix it.
Show solutions
  • EX01 Engineers: structure, decisions, interfaces; operators: failure handling, dashboards, procedures; leadership: risks, cost, outcomes, status. Different documents, linked.
  • EX02 Context: customers, web app, payment provider, warehouse; containers: gateway, order service, PostgreSQL, Kafka, inventory; label protocols.
  • EX03 docs/architecture, docs/adr, docs/runbooks in the repo; link check and diagram build in CI; owner and review date in front matter; docs reviewed in the code PR.
  • EX04 Step: run the connection-count query (exact SQL), expected below N; check replica lag via the dashboard link, expected below 5 s; if not, go to step with failover decision; escalate after 15 minutes.
  • EX05 Move the decision needed and recommendation to the top, then context, goals, options with trade-offs, risks, rollout, open questions.
  • EX06 Add symptom and impact, ordered quick checks with expected results, rollback, escalation contacts, and verification of recovery.

Workplace evidence: a design doc or runbook used by others without your help.

Quiz

Outcomes: O1 audience-tailored architecture description · O2 docs as code · O3 runbooks · O4 design docs.

A self-check for you: nothing is graded, saved or sent anywhere. Choose an answer, then check it. You can try again as often as you like.

  1. 1One document written for every audience:O1
  2. 2A subsystem description mainly needs C4 levels:O1
  3. 3Why keep diagrams as text?O1
  4. 4Docs as code means:O2
  5. 5A useful CI check for docs:O2
  6. 6A runbook step should be:O3
  7. 7The best test of a runbook:O3
  8. 8A runbook must include:O3
  9. 9A design doc should start with:O4
  10. 10To get a decision in one review you should:O4

Practical part

Six documentation exercises SRC-010-EX01 to EX06 plus the lab pack. Pass: quiz at least 8/10, at least five exercises correct, and a documentation review passing (COM dimension weighted higher) with a runbook a peer executes without help.

Common mistakes

One document for every audience; runbooks with "investigate" as a step.

Assessment

Documentation review (COM dimension, higher weight at this level).

Workplace evidence

A design doc or runbook used by others without your help.
