Sync vs async

  • Lesson 1 of 6
  • Mid-level
On This Lesson 4 topics

This lesson is planned. The outline below lists the topics it will cover. The full lesson has not been published yet.

In this lesson

compare the two styles by coupling, latency, and failure.

Planned topics

  • Synchronous: the caller waits for the answer (HTTP, gRPC). Simple, immediate result.
  • Asynchronous: the caller sends a message and continues (broker). Decoupled in time, harder to reason about.
  • Sync couples availability: if inventory is down, orders fails too.
  • Async absorbs spikes and outages, but the result arrives later and must be tracked.
  • Use sync for queries needing an answer now; async for work that can finish later.
