Learn first

4 h of practice (estimate)

Learning outcomes

  1. Design workforce identity: SSO, federation with the corporate directory, and MFA.
  2. Design customer identity (CIAM): registration, social login, account recovery, and privacy.
  3. Choose between SAML, OAuth 2.0, and OIDC for each integration and explain why.
  4. Design cloud IAM for people and workloads with least privilege.

Lessons

  1. 01Identity as the new perimeter
  2. 02Workforce identity and SSO
  3. 03Federation: SAML, OAuth 2.0, OIDC
  4. 04Customer identity
  5. 05Cloud IAM for people and workloads
  6. 06Demo: Larkspur's identity architecture end to end
  7. 07Demo: SSO for store staff into the new back office

Lab and exercises

Lab

ARC-017-LAB1 · Larkspur identity design

Outcomes: 1–4 · Time: ~4 h

  1. Identify the identity populations and applications: store and head-office staff, customers, partners and suppliers, workloads.
  2. Design workforce SSO, federation, and MFA, including store staff.
  3. Design customer identity for web and mobile, including recovery and privacy.
  4. Choose a protocol (SAML, OAuth 2.0, OIDC) per integration with the reason.
  5. Define cloud IAM roles for people and workloads and break-glass access.

Acceptance: protocol choice justified per integration; no shared accounts; break-glass access defined.

Exercises (case-based; six exercises)

IDOutcomeTask
ARC-017-EX011Design joiner-mover-leaver for 120 stores with high staff turnover.
ARC-017-EX021Choose MFA approach for cashiers on shared tills and for head-office administrators.
ARC-017-EX032List what the customer identity service must provide and which privacy rights it must support.
ARC-017-EX042The product owner wants a custom login page built in-house. Write the recommendation.
ARC-017-EX053Pick a protocol for: HR SaaS sign-in, the mobile app, a partner delivery-status API, a legacy intranet app that only supports SAML.
ARC-017-EX064An access key for the order service was found in a repository. Describe the remediation and the better design.
Show solutions
  • EX01 HR system is the source: hire creates account and role by store; transfers change role/store automatically; termination disables access immediately; periodic access review.
  • EX02 Cashiers: badge or app-based second factor with short sessions and per-user sign-in; admins: phishing-resistant MFA (hardware key or passkey) plus just-in-time elevation.
  • EX03 Registration, login, social login, recovery, MFA option, consent management, data export and deletion, minimal data collection, audit of access to personal data.
  • EX04 Recommend a managed CIAM: lower security risk, faster delivery, built-in recovery and MFA; build only if requirements are unmet, which they are not.
  • EX05 HR SaaS: SAML (or OIDC if supported); mobile app: OIDC with authorization code and PKCE; partner API: OAuth 2.0 client credentials; legacy intranet: SAML.
  • EX06 Revoke and rotate the key now, search logs for use, remove from history; redesign with a workload role and short-lived credentials; add secret scanning to the pipeline.

Quiz

Outcomes: O1 workforce identity · O2 customer identity · O3 protocol choice · O4 cloud IAM.

A self-check for you: nothing is graded, saved or sent anywhere. Choose an answer, then check it. You can try again as often as you like.

  1. 1SSO means:O1
  2. 2Why federate with the corporate directory?O1
  3. 3A shared account for a whole store is:O1
  4. 4Which weak point do attackers often target in customer identity?O2
  5. 5For customer login, the recommended starting point is:O2
  6. 6Which protocol adds sign-in on top of OAuth 2.0?O3
  7. 7A mobile app should use:O3
  8. 8A SaaS tool that only supports SAML gets:O3
  9. 9For workloads, prefer:O4
  10. 10Break-glass access should be:O4

Practical part

Identity design review of the ARC-017-LAB1 design plus exercises ARC-017-EX01 to EX06. Pass: quiz at least 8/10, at least five of six exercises correct, protocol choice justified per integration, no shared accounts, and break-glass access defined.

Common mistakes

Building customer login in-house without need; long-lived access keys for workloads.
